Pearcing Flower

✦ ✦ ✦

Shaped in the tradition of northern Italian workshops active during the height of condottiere warfare, this Gothic heater shield carries the interlaced floral motif — the Pearcing Flower — as documented in Venetian armorial records of the mid-14th century.

Hand-carved from seasoned plywood, braced with a single vertical glue-lam spine and covered in calfskin leather pulled tight over the face. The floral device is rendered in gesso and natural mineral pigments, then sealed with a linseed oil varnish. The enarmes — grip straps — are fitted in the traditional Italian fashion with a guige strap for shoulder carry. Each board is individually selected for knot-free grain and optimum flex under impact.
